We were presented with an exciting and unconventional challenge: to design a video game for The Suðurnes Science and Learning Center, or Þekkingarsetur Suðurnesja. This engaging educational tool, intended for use on tablets, aims to teach kindergarten and primary school children about their local environment.
The Suðurnes Science and Learning Center frequently hosts educational trips for children, and our goal was to spark their interest in the museum, enrich their experiences, and stimulate their curiosity. We embraced this challenge with enthusiasm.
When we began the project, the concept for the game was still in its early stages. We were given initial ideas for characters and a rough outline of the educational content from the client and in collaboration with the Science and Learning Center, we developed a vibrant world, crafting the environment, selecting colors, defining character personalities, and designing the gameplay mechanics.
Our characters—Fróðleiks-Fúsi, Vísinda-Linda, and RostunGulli—are joined by the clever ravens Reyn and Rýn, as well as the biologist Carl von Linné and Lína Appelsína. Together, they guide players through the game, giving fun facts about various animals.
To ensure accessibility for young users, we decided to center the game around a map inspired by the setup within the Science and Learning Center. This interactive map features numerous illustrated animals that children can compare with the exhibits in the museum, all while being guided by Fúsi and his friends. We emphasized creating colorful, engaging illustrations that would captivate children’s attention while remaining clear and straightforward on smaller tablet screens.
At this stage, we had established a vibrant world designed to educate children about Iceland's diverse wildlife, from small coastal creatures to majestic whales. The next phase involved producing approximately 70 animal illustrations and refining the overall game design.
Upon starting the game, users are warmly welcomed by Fróðleiks-Fúsi, who introduces the characters and sets the stage for exploration. Players can scroll through the map, search for animals, and uncover fascinating facts about the night owl as they navigate the museum. The game features an array of engaging facts, remarkable animals, quizzes, and cheerful characters, all designed to create an enriching learning experience. The game can be played in Icelandic, English and Polish.
We thoroughly enjoyed working with The Suðurnes Science and Learning Center on this unconventional and colorful project.
